'Baby box' opens in Russia to save abandoned kids

KIRISHI, Russia (AP) ? A box in which parents can leave their babies anonymously without any legal risk opened Wednesday in a town in northwestern Russia ? part of an effort that activists hope will save many young lives.

The baby box in Kirishi, an industrial town 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of St. Petersburg, is the tenth such facility in Russia. Experts think that's just a fraction of what is needed.

"Even if only one child is saved that way it will be worth it," said Tatiana Sobolevskya, deputy chief of the maternity department of Kirishi's hospital, where the baby box is located. Nikolai Muravlev, a Russian Orthodox priest, came to bless the box and praise it as "island of safety."

Once a baby is put in the box, its door closes and a nurse gets alerted by a signal. There are no security cameras so parents can leave their babies anonymously. An information stand next to the box appeals to parents to think over their decision and offers contact numbers for assistance.

Kolybel Nadezhdy (Cradle of Hope), a non-government organization that opened the baby box, said it should help attract nationwide attention to the issue. Its head, Yelena Kotova, said more than a dozen babies are abandoned in Russia every month according to official statistics, but she said the real figures are believed to be at least three times higher.

Russian police have registered 268 cases of murder of newborn babies by their mothers in 2010-2011, and Russian media have carried regular reports of babies found in garbage containers, forests or snowdrifts. One of the most recent cases was in St. Petersburg in August, when a man found a 3-day-old baby in a plastic bag in the bushes. The boy survived and was soon adopted.

Kotova said in her home city of Perm in the Ural Mountains, the bodies of two newborn babies were found on a balcony. A woman who lived there with her other children just felt unable to raise another child, she said.

In July, a five-day-old girl was left in a baby box in Perm with a note giving her name, Margarita, and her date of birth. Two more babies were left in baby boxes organized by Russia's Krasnodar region.

Russia borrowed the baby box idea from other European countries, where they have become quite numerous in recent years but have also fueled heated discussions. Critics say they infringe on the rights of mothers and children.

"A baby box isn't a universal cure, it's a way to attract attention to the problem and to help women," said Galina Murzakayeva, a coordinator for the Kirishi project.

On a beach in New Jersey, a deer confused by storm preparations ran into the ocean (see photos above). A caring person, Eric Walsh, pulled the deer from the surf, but the deer lacked the strength to move inland.

Our New Jersey state director, Kathleen Schatzman, rounded up wildlife rehabilitators, the Montmouth County police, and New Jersey's Associated Humane Societies. Through a combined effort the buck was tranquilized and removed from the beach, for perhaps the first animal rescue of the storm.

Chrono Trigger role-playing game released for Android

Attention old-school gamers: Chrono Trigger has just launched on Google Play, bringing the classic role-playing game to Android. The Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum are two new areas that were included in the Nintendo DS port which have found their way to this iteration as well. Despite most of the graphics and gameplay staying intact from the SNES original, some of the controls have been tweaked for touch interfaces. Language support spreads English, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. 

As the title suggests, Chrono Trigger features a lot of time travel, from prehistory to the far future to the the end of time. Even the original contemporary setting that the heroes start in is only Earth-ish and has some of its own unique fantasy flair. Along the way, your party grows to include a robot, a half-man half-frog, a cavewoman, and plenty of other colorful characters. 

As with most Square Enix games on mobile, you'll be paying a premium for the privilege of playing their games on mobile devices, but $9.99 isn't quite as bad as what they're charging for some of their other titles. Although I played a bunch of Final Fantasy 3, I never had a chance to dig into Chrono Trigger. This might be my cue, but what about you guys? Did anyone here play the original, but are still tempted to pick up the mobile version? Any DS players able to vouch for the quality of the new content?

Ahead of the big Windows Phone soiree later today, Nokia has now confirmed that Verizon will be getting the Lumia 822, which will its 4G portfolio in the coming months. While the fact that a Big Red version of Nokia's second Windows Phone 8 device wasn't the best-kept secret, Nokia's proud press release (after the break) finally confirms it -- although it neglects to mention any prices or dates. The phone will arrive in black, white and grey options -- all LTE-ready, with those interchangeable covers also incoming. That slightly modest 4.3-inch screen WVGA screen will also try to make the most of those colorful tiles -- and we'll likely get play with one very soon.

For very many years I only associated tequila with bad margaritas or single shots taken quickly and finished with a lick of salt off of my hand followed by sucking on a wedge of lime (oh yes I did!).? About a decade ago I was schooled a bit about the value of aging and discovered the beauty of Reposado and Anejo tequilas. I began making my favorite margaritas and enjoyed good sipping tequila. It was a great lesson learned and those cocktails were good?but that was it, that was all tequila was good for, right?

Absolutely not! Last year I made a warm coffee cocktail that was spiked with tequila and Kahlau and it was so good. I think using tequila typically in conjunction with citrus has too often limited our imaginations when thinking about possibilities. Used in a cocktail like this one the effect is warming and rich and wonderful. You have to promise to try it so you can also enjoy how good it is!

I feel most fortunate to have developed relationships with some brands both new and previously unfamiliar that help to support this weekly effort by providing me with the adult beverages I need to do a cocktail each week. The best part might be trying something new and this tequila is a keeper. Peligroso Tequila is is a rare, 84 proof ultra premium Tequila from agave that is grown on an estate in Jalisco, Mexico. Their Silver tequila is just barely aged so not as smooth as a Reposado would be so I thought it would be perfect blended in this cocktail?a hot chocolate made from milk, Ibarra; a Mexican chocolate bar with cinnamon that is perfect for hot chocolate and the addition of Scharffenberger Natural Cocoa Powder that I thought would really up the chocolate factor; making it an even richer component.

We had some snow last night in Denver; fall here is as wacky as spring! 80 degrees one day; snow the next before all the leaves have turned and fallen! I?m going to try and survive?and this cocktail is going to help!

Mexican Hot Chocolate with Tequila and Cayenne Pepper

A wonderful and warming cocktail for fall and winter.

Ingredients

• 3 cups Milk (I used 1% and it was good)
• 1 and 1/2 bars Ibarra chocolate; broken into chunks
• 6 Tbsp Scharffenberger Cocoa Powder
• 2 Tbsp Cane Sugar
• 1/8 - 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper (start with 1/8 tsp and season to taste)
• 4 ozs Tequila
• 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
• Ground Cinnamon for Garnish

Preparation

1. Warm the milk in a medium size heavy saucepan on medium heat, watching carefully.
2. Add the Ibarra chocolate, the cocoa powder and the sugar.
3. Heat until the chocolate dissolves, whisking to combine all ingredients.
4. Season with the cayenne pepper. Start with 1/8 teaspoon and season to your taste.
5. Pour the warm milk into 2 large mugs and add 2 oz of tequila.
6. Top with whipping cream; sprinkle whipping cream with cinnamon.

So what do the decades of research on fathers say? Boys from fatherless families are twice as likely to end up?in prison before age 30. Girls raised in homes without their fathers are much more likely to engage in early sexual behavior and end up pregnant as teenagers?for example, girls whose fathers left home before their daughters turned six are?six times more likely to end up pregnant as teenagers. Children who grow up without married mothers and fathers are also more likely to experience?depression, behavioral problems, and school expulsion.

There is also more abuse in homes without fathers. In studies of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, fathers living with their children emerge as strong protectors?both through watching over their children?s activities and communicating to others that they will protect them. In one study,?abuse was 10 times more likely?for children in homes with their mother and an unrelated boyfriend.

These differences can partly be explained by the fact that these children are?more likely to grow up in poverty. But that too reveals the importance of dads, as married fathers are the primary breadwinners in almost 70% of married families?providing resources that benefit children in a whole host of ways.

In spite of this evidence, some academics and voices that shape public opinion are asserting that fathers are not, in fact, essential. As two researchers recently?argued?in a top-tier family science publication, ?The gender of parents only matters in ways that don?t matter.? Though it may be important to have two ?parental figures,? their genders and relationship to the child don?t matter that much. Fathers?as well as mothers?are supposedly disposable when it comes to their own children?s development.

Not surprisingly, arguments for ?genderless parenting? are often based on a particular view of what defines male and female equality. Depending on the definition, one can do what the other can do, and do it just as well, if given the chance. Thus, mothers and fathers are interchangeable, and one or the other gender is unnecessary and replaceable.

It?s easy to see why these claims seem believable. We all know mothers who are breadwinners, and fathers who perform the traditional female role of providing full-time quality child care. And a body of research shows that fathers have both the desire and capacity to be protective, nurturing, affectionate, and responsive with their children.

But are fathers and mothers really the same? Do mothers ?father? and do fathers ?mother? in the same way the other would do?

Canadian scholar, Andrea Doucet, has explored this question in her book?Do Men Mother??Her extensive research with 118 male primary caregivers, including stay-at-home dads, led her to conclude that fathers do not ?mother.? And that?s a good thing. Although mothering and fathering have much in common, there were persistent, critical differences that were important for children?s development.

To begin, fathers more often used fun and playfulness to connect with their children. No doubt, many a mother has wondered why her husband can?t seem to help himself from ?tickling and tossing? their infant?while she stands beside him holding her breath in fear. And he can?t understand why all she wants to do is ?coo and cuddle.? Yet as Doucet found, playfulness and fun are often critical modes of connection with children?even from infancy.

Fathers also more consistently made it a point to get their children outdoors to do physical activities with them. Almost intuitively they seemed to know that responding to the physical and developmental needs of their children was an important aspect of nurturing.

When fathers responded to children?s emotional hurts, they differed from mothers in their focus on fixing the problem rather than addressing the hurt feeling. While this did not appear to be particularly ?nurturing? at first, the seeming ?indifference? was useful? particularly as children grew older. They would seek out and share things with their dads precisely because of their measured, problem-solving responses. The ?indifference? actually became a strategic form of nurturing in emotionally-charged situations.

Fathers were also more likely to encourage children?s risk taking?whether on the playground, in school work, or in trying new things. While mothers typically discouraged risk-taking, fathers guided their children in deciding how much risk to take and encouraged them in it. At the same time, fathers were more attuned to developing a child?s physical, emotional, and intellectual independence?in everything from children making their own lunches and tying their own shoes to doing household chores and making academic decisions.

As she evaluated these differences, Doucet wondered if fathers just weren?t as ?nurturing? as mothers. Their behaviors didn?t always fit the traditional definition of ?holding close and sensitively responding.? But a key part of nurturing also includes the capacity to ?let go.? It was this careful ?letting-go? that fathers were particularly good at?in ways that mothers were often not.

Her findings provide empirical evidence for the feelings described on?Public Discourse?by Robert Oscar Lopez in his recent account of growing up without the influence of his father. Lopez yearned for what kids in traditional families often take for granted?the opportunity to learn how to act, speak, and behave in ways that reflect the unique gender cues provided by the parenting of a father and a mother. Although Lopez would have appeared normal on most sociological indexes (as a well-trained, high achieving student), inside he felt confused. In his own words, he grew up ?weird,? unable to relate to or understand either gender very well. And that made it hard to understand himself.

Andrea Doucet ends her report by sharing an illuminating moment from her research. After a long evening discussing their experiences as single dads, Doucet asked a group of sole-custody fathers, ?In an ideal world, what resources or supports would you like to see for single fathers?? She expected to hear that they wanted greater social support and societal acceptance, more programs and policies directed at single dads. Instead, after a period of awkward silence, one dad stood and said, ?An ideal world would be one with a father and a mother. We?d be lying if we pretended that wasn?t true.? Nods of agreement followed with expressions of approval from the other dads. Although many had had bitter experiences of separation and divorce, they couldn?t help but acknowledge the inherent connectedness of mothering and fathering?and the profound deficit experienced when one or the other is not there.

Arguments for the non-essential father may reflect an effort to accept the reality that many children today grow up without their dads. But surely a more effective and compassionate approach would be to acknowledge the unique contributions of both mothers and fathers in their children?s lives, and then do what we can to ensure that becomes a reality for more children.
