Microsoft Research head Craig Mundie to retire in 2014

Microsoft Research boss Craig Mundie will step down in 2014, after working over 20 years in both Microsoft's security and R&D departments. The research arm has been run by Mundie since 2008, where he's been responsible for some pretty interesting projects, from early glimpses of Redmond's future to real-time multilingual translation. The day-to-day running of the department will be transferred to former chief technical strategy officer Eric Rudder, while Mundie will continue to advise CEO Steve Ballmer. According to the Seattle Times, the move is line with Microsoft's plans to focus on mobile and web-based developments, while the new role might give the veteran Mundie a little more time to work on his Japanese.

The World in 2013: Who's Winning in Mobile ... - Yahoo! Finance

Landline phones were largely replaced by mobile phones in 2001 and 11 years later it appears personal computers are headed in the same direction. The number of Internet-connected mobile devices are projected to surpass the number of desktop and laptop personal computers in use in 2013.

According to The Economist?s Daniel Franklin, mobile companies received $3.9 billion in venture capital investments in the first half of 2012 -- 46% of all venture capital invested. More funding went into mobile firms in 2011 than in any year since 2001, Franklin tells The Daily Ticker.

So what does this mean for technology companies? Facebook (FB) bought photo-sharing app Instagram, a mobile-only service, for nearly $1 billion this year, but the the social media company's ability to emerge as a winner in the mobile world is unclear.

Related: Facebook?s Instagram Backtracks: ?It Is Not Our Intention to Sell Your Photos,? Says Co-Founder

Advertising rates are lower for mobile phones and Facebook is already struggling to turn a profit from its desktop ads, says Franklin. Still, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is banking on mobile and devoting time and money into figuring out how Facebook will profit from it.

Apple (AAPL), Franklin says, is the real winner of the mobile revolution. Despite losing some ground to rival tablet devices, the iPad still made up 50.4% of Apple's Q3 sales in 2012. The iPhone dominates its market, accounting for nearly 75% of all profits in the mobile-phone industry. Apple?s ability to shine in mobile markets has made the company what it is today -- one of the most profitable publicly traded U.S. corporations.

PC giants like Dell (DELL), HP (HPQ), and Microsoft (MSFT) are losing out on mobile profits, Franklin tells The Daily Ticker. Phone makers Nokia (NOK) and Research in Motion (RIMM) have also made missteps by not making the Internet the center of their products. Online retailers like Amazon (AMZN) and eBay (EBAY) are transitioning toward mobile stores with success, Franklin notes.

With products like Google (GOOG) Glass set to make a big splash in the retail market, the Internet may soon be a part of us, literally. In 2013 Web sites and retailers will have to make changes that reflect this shift or face irrelevancy.

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson, File)

(AP) ? Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it has reached a settlement worth more than $1 billion in a case involving unintended acceleration problems in its vehicles.

The company said the deal will resolve hundreds of lawsuits from Toyota owners who said the value of their cars and trucks plummeted after a series of recalls stemming from claims that Toyota vehicles accelerated unintentionally.

Steve Berman, a lawyer representing Toyota owners, said the settlement is the largest in U.S. history involving automobile defects.

"We kept fighting and fighting and we secured what we think was a good settlement given the risks of this litigation," Berman told The Associated Press.

The proposed deal was filed Wednesday and must receive the approval of U.S. District Judge James Selna, who was expected to review the settlement Friday.

Toyota said it will take a one-time, $1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. Berman said the total value of the deal is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Toyota since 2009, when the Japanese automaker started receiving numerous complaints that its cars accelerated on their own, causing crashes, injuries and even deaths.

The cases were consolidated in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana and divided into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. Claims by people who seek compensation for injury and death due to sudden acceleration are not part of the settlement; the first trial involving those suits is scheduled for February.

As part of the economic loss settlement, Toyota will offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010.

The company also will launch a $250 million program for 16 million current owners to provide supplemental warranty coverage for certain vehicle components, and it will retrofit about 3.2 million vehicles with a brake override system. An override system is designed to ensure a car will stop when the brakes are applied, even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

The settlement would also establish additional driver education programs and fund new research into advanced safety technologies.

"In keeping with our core principles, we have structured this agreement in ways that work to put our customers first and demonstrate that they can count on Toyota to stand behind our vehicles," said Christopher Reynolds, Toyota vice president and general counsel.

Current and former Toyota owners are expected to receive more information about the settlement in the coming months. Some information is also available at http://www.ToyotaELsettlement.com , a website created for Toyota owners affected by the settlement.

"We are extraordinarily proud of how we were able to represent the interests of Toyota owners, and believe this settlement is both comprehensive in its scope and fair in compensation," Berman said.

Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems in several models and brake defects with the Prius hybrid. The automaker has blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems.

Plaintiffs' attorneys have spent the past two years deposing Toyota employees, poring over thousands of documents and reviewing software code, but the company maintains those lawyers have been unable to prove that a design defect ? namely Toyota's electronic throttle control system ? was responsible for vehicles surging unexpectedly.

Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA were unable to find any defects in Toyota's source code that could cause problems.

The company has been dogged by fines for not reporting problems in a timely manner.

Earlier this month, NHTSA doled out a record $17.4 million fine to Toyota for failing to quickly report floor mat problems with some of its Lexus models. Toyota paid a total of $48.8 million in fines for three violations in 2010.

Toyota President Akio Toyoda appeared before Congress last year and pledged to strengthen quality control. Recent sales figures show the company appears to have rebounded following its safety issues.

NY charity finds shelter for homeless in Hamptons

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) ? It's not so easy to spot the homeless in the Hamptons in the summer, when celebrity A-listers fly in by helicopter and Wall Street whizzes drive out in their Jaguars and Lexuses.

It's not that the homeless don't exist in the string of famously exclusive waterfront communities on the eastern end of Long Island ? they just blend in more easily when it's warm.

Some landscape laborers curl up in barns with the mowers and leaf blowers. Others, who struggle with mental problems or drug and alcohol issues, live in tents deep in the Long Island woods. Then there are those with minimum-wage jobs who simply can't afford prohibitive Hamptons rents and live in their cars.

But when the November winds blow and the mercury plummets faster than falling leaves, several dozen are given refuge by an organization called Maureen's Haven.

"Essentially, in its purest form, we exist to prevent homeless adults from freezing to death during the coldest winter months," said Tracey Lutz, executive director of the privately funded charity founded about a dozen years ago to provide a place to stay and a warm meal for those unwilling or unable to avail themselves of government-run shelters.

The charity works with a network of churches in eastern Long Island to open their basements and auditoriums on a rotating basis throughout the week, staffing the facilities with volunteers. Some churches accommodate several dozen, while others take in just a handful of people nightly. It isn't fancy, but it's a warm meal and a place to sleep.

As many as 50 people each night begin gathering at a modest house in a neighborhood in Riverhead, the nearby seat of Suffolk County, where Maureen's Haven runs the only private homeless shelter on the East End. Lutz says the homeless, including a small percentage of illegal aliens who are barred from seeking county assistance, undergo screening before being permitted to board vans that take them to a designated church for the evening.

Bags are searched daily for drugs or alcohol. Participants also must adhere to a code of conduct, which includes no fighting and no weapons of any sort.

Anyone who fails to pass muster at Maureen's Haven, which also bans registered sex offenders, are referred to the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, which provides emergency shelter for as many as 500 families and several hundred individuals nightly at dozens of locations.

Many of those who turn to Maureen's Haven say they are native "East Enders" reluctant to travel as far as 50 miles across the vast island from their home turf for a warm bed, Lutz said. They "prefer to remain in their community rather than be placed wherever the county has a bed," she said.

Jennifer Sulzer, a 37-year-old mother of four teenage sons who currently live with relatives, said medical problems have prevented her from working. She said she has been using Maureen's Haven on and off for the past four years.

"You're around people who are loving and have compassion," said Sulzer, who once had an apartment in Riverhead.

Michael Kline, 43, says he spent more than three years living in the woods after his career as a carpenter building store interiors fell apart because of drug problems. He is currently unemployed.

"I went from Park Avenue to park bench," said Kline, who said he attends an outpatient drug treatment program for three hours a day. "This place has given me the ability to go to treatment every day. If I was out there tonight in the rain, the last thing I would want to do is get up tomorrow morning and go sit in group for three hours."

Lutz said the Great Recession changed the face of homelessness across the country, including the Hamptons.

"We might want to believe that people are homeless because they're drug addicts and they're mentally ill and they're criminals and all these other things and therefore it's their own fault," she said. "We can't necessarily hold onto that for much longer. Because it's a fantasy."

She said she sees clients who work in local drugstores and restaurants but just can't make ends meet, especially in a region where an omelet in some restaurants can cost as much as $30.

Forbes magazine this year named the village of Sagaponack in Southampton as the fourth-richest ZIP code in America, with a median home price of $4.1 million and a median income of $103,000, according to census figures.

Many of those who have vacation homes in the Hamptons, however, do not necessarily identify themselves as local residents for the purposes of the census and other data.

Suffolk County officials said this month that 20 Southampton families were being provided emergency shelter in one of its group homes, but noted the figures are constantly in flux. Suffolk listed 55 families in the town of Riverhead being housed in shelters.

"They're working at Rite Aid and they're working at Friendly's; they're not making enough money to put a roof over their head,' Lutz said. 'They're making enough money to sort of buy some of the things that they need, so they come here so that they have a safe place to sleep.'

Maureen's Haven operates on an annual budget of $340,000, much of which comes from private donations. Its offices feature several tables with computers where homeless clients can look for employment and available housing during the day.

Joann Piche, chairwoman of the Maureen's Haven board of directors, said she understands it may be difficult for some to think of the Hamptons as a place where the homeless need help.

"The privet hedges, the beaches, the resort community, the gigantic homes that are used 12 weekends out of the year," she said. "Every time I drive past one of these homes that for the most part are empty, I'm thinking, wow, how many people could we house in this place?"

How To Improve Your Success In Internet Marketing To Make Money

How to make money online.

It?s really not much of a secret that not everyone out there who starts up a business on the web is going to be successful, but one fact you can bank on is that there is enough opportunity for everyone to be successful. And with some great tips like the ones below, there is no reason that you cannot achieve success.

A very simple tip to remember for Web marketing is to set goals. You should have some idea what your website intends to accomplish and how you plan to go about accomplishing it. You should also devise a system to keep track of the goals you have created and track your accomplishments for future reference.

Make Money

One of the best ways in order to make money marketing your products on the internet is by holding $1 specials for potential customers. People will be encouraged to buy your products for a dollar and may buy other products as well. You can sell a certain e-book for $1 but have an ad next to it that sells another e-book for $20.

Online marketing is the absolute best way to make money and the best way to do that is with popular, established search engines. Simply because of popularity and because they store every search and pop up ads based on demographics, it is the easiest to use and most efficient way of sending ads.

Make Money Online

?Increase traffic? is the one high commandment of internet promotion, but maybe it shouldn?t be. Traffic is good, and more traffic is better, but never forget that satisfying customers is how you actually make money online. Do what you can to increase your website?s traffic without losing sight of the customers that actually pay for your bottom line.

When setting prices for the products you are selling, be sure to keep customer demographics in mind. For example, if you are selling guides for college students to make money online while they are in school, selling those guides for $100 would be foolish, since many college students don?t have that kind of money to burn.

How To Make Money

To network and improve the visibility of your brand, go to real-world web marketing events. There are several such events every year, such as PubCon, where internet marketers can interact with their virtual colleagues and share ideas on how to make money. If you?re lucky, you can even find a business partner.

Two similar businesses on the same street may cause one to fail, but two million similar businesses online and there?s still room for two million more to compete. It?s all about who markets the best to their particular niche. There is literally room for everyone. And that?s why it?s important to use what you?ve learned above. The competition will run you over if you?re not applying these tips.

94% Looper

All Critics (233) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (218) | Rotten (15)

The reasoning behind all this may not reward prolonged inspection, but Johnson is smart enough to press onward with his plot, leaving us with neither the time nor the desire to linger over the logic ...

Writer-director Rian Johnson establishes himself as an original talent who clearly believes storytelling must prevail.

A mind-bending ride that is not afraid to slow down now and again, to explore themes of regret and redemption, solitude and sacrifice, love and loss. It's a movie worth seeing and, perhaps, going back to see again.

Looper has more heart than Brick and the 2008 con-man flick The Brothers Bloom. Both fine achievements, they could also be described as viscerally cerebral.

I'm a sucker for time-travel movies.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss ...

The movie is morally murky, to put it lightly, and that's a bit refreshing; we're made to think about why we want the protagonists to achieve their goals.

Intelligent, extremely imaginative, visually stunning and constantly surprising, this is filmmaking of the highest order from Rian Johnson.

Looper is among the cleverest, most skillfully crafted and entertaining sci-fi thrillers of the past 20 years.

The smartest, most stylish and most outright entertaining science-fiction film of the year.

A thought-provoking, heart-pounding take on the applications and ethics of time travel which, oddly enough, doubles up as a lesson in the importance of good parenting.

This is one of those rare genre movies (like the original TERMINATOR) that reminds us that Sci-Fi can be smart. It's much more than just a bunch of special effects and explosions. It's what all movies should aspire to be.

While it sometimes feels like it's trying to do much, Looper manages to be a creditable and exciting sci-fi flick that homages the past while carving out a unique identity.

Much as he did in Brick, Johnson creates a carefully drawn world in Looper that exists by its own particular set of rules.

... has an irresistible energy and a don't-give-a-damn unpredictability ...

Beautifully crafted, acted and written.

Anchors high-concept thrills and captivating ideas in a world of challenging morality and intricate personal consequences.

Truly imaginative but all the twists and turns make the overall film difficult to follow. Plus Gordon-Levitt has not reached leading man status yet.

Kind of a reverse-"Terminator" without any of James Cameron's wit (or wisdom),

An endlessly creative mind-blowing film that captures everything right about the movie going experience. Johnson conjures up the most imaginative action/science fiction film since 'Inception.'

Part science fiction, part mob movie, and with a nice infusion of dark comedy at just the right moments, Looper is Johnson's best movie yet, and manages to be hugely entertaining, affecting, and thought-provoking.

takes us far beyond the film's high-concept premise into the kind of emotional terrain that too often escapes even the best genre filmmakers

Doesn't quite reach the heights of the lofty ideals that it so ardently seeks to expound, but makes up for this with the sheer thrill of the journey Rian Johnson takes us on.

Ingenious with a fine performance by Emily Blunt, but far too much cold-blooded violence.

Engaging, exciting, and successfully cross-breeding elements of Terminator and even Pet Sematary, Looper is a solid work of palatable science-fiction.

Looper's super. An action-thriller that bothers to have a brain.

Obama Social Security offer at odds with top Dems

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's offer to slow the growth of Social Security benefits would force fellow Democrats in Congress to abandon promises to shield the massive retirement and disability program from cuts as part of negotiations to avoid the year-end fiscal cliff.

Both Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., pledged not to touch Social Security as part of deficit reduction talks. Now that Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, have agreed to a new measure of inflation that would reduce annual cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs, for Social Security and other government programs, Democrats are reluctant to call it a deal-breaker.

As Obama and Boehner continued to haggle over how much to raise taxes and cut spending, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney called the new inflation measure a technical adjustment designed to make inflation estimates more accurate, and he emphasized it's Republicans who want it.

"Let's be clear. This is something that the Republicans have asked for, and as part of an effort to find common ground with the Republicans, the president has agreed to put this in his proposal," Carney told reporters Tuesday. "The president has always said, as part of this process when we're talking about the spending cut side of this, that it would require tough choices by both sides."

Boehner proposed the change earlier this month in talks with Obama, and the president included it in a counteroffer this week.

Carney said Obama's plan "would protect vulnerable communities, including the very elderly, when it comes to Social Security recipients."

The White House has not released details on how Obama's plan would do this. But the president's 2010 deficit commission recommended an enhanced minimum benefit for low-wage workers and an automatic increase in benefits once a person has been receiving Social Security for 20 years.

The inflation measure under consideration is called the Chained Consumer Price Index. On average, the measure shows a lower level of inflation than the more widely used Consumer Price Index because it assumes that as prices rise, consumers turn to lower-cost alternatives, reducing the amount of inflation they experience.

If adopted across the government, the change would have far-reaching effects because so many programs are adjusted each year based on year-to-year changes in consumer prices.

On average, annual increases in Social Security payments, government pensions and veterans' benefits would be about 0.3 percentage points smaller each year. Next year's COLA is 1.7 percent. Under the new measure of inflation, it would be about 1.4 percent.

Taxes would slowly increase because annual adjustments to income tax brackets would be smaller, pushing more people into higher tax brackets. Over time, fewer people would be eligible for anti-poverty programs like Medicaid, Head Start, food stamps and school lunches because annual adjustments to the poverty level would be smaller, leaving fewer people under the official poverty line.

If enacted for 2014, the change would reduce government borrowing by $223 billion over the next decade ? $158 billion in spending cuts and $65 billion in tax increases, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The biggest savings ? $102 billion ? would come from Social Security.

"I just don't think that's fair," Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., said. "We've got to get serious about balancing the budget. But asking Donald Trump to pay a dollar more is not the same as taking something away from a lower income community that's just squeaking by."

Advocates for older Americans have been fighting against chained CPI for years, and they have stepped up their efforts since Boehner raised the issue earlier this month.

"Too many Washington politicians clearly hope middle-class Americans simply won't notice billions of dollars in Social Security benefit cuts," said Max Richtman, president and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. "I promise you. Seniors and their families will notice."

Reid has been adamant that Social Security should not be included in deficit-reduction talks, but he sidestepped a question about it Tuesday.

"This isn't going to be a situation where we're going to vote on a particular provision in the bill," Reid said. "It's going to be a framework to do something about the long-term security of this country."

Other Democratic senators were more direct.

"It doesn't warm my heart, I'll tell you that," Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said of the proposal. "The whole understanding has been that we wouldn't do Social Security. That was for later."

Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., said, "I'm going to fight hard to keep Social Security out of this. I'm going to fight to protect our federal workforce because they've already made sacrifices. There's a lot of priorities I have. But I think we have to wait and see how the negotiations go."

Marketing & Customer Contact Silos Prevent Smart Service Delivery ...

Our ?always on? society is putting more pressure on organisations to deliver good customer service.? Consumers are becoming increasingly frustrated by facing siloed organisations when they themselves are connected, whilst organisations are playing catch up with emerging channels in the social arena.

?

Our latest research into ?Smart Service?, in conjunction with KANA, reveals a pressing need for greater cross-department collaboration and better representation for customer service at board level in order to deliver a truly customer-centric service strategy.

?

For organisations to succeed in the future, closer collaboration between the rest of the organisation, and in particular between marketing and customer service functions, is necessary to deliver on customer promises, retain customer loyalty and attract new business.

?

A key finding from the research was that overall 47% of respondents do not regard marketing directors as having an increased role in customer service investment decisions. ?A further 16% perceive them as beginning to have a role but limited in scope and authority, with just 9% stating that the marketing director is on an equal footing with the customer service director and IT director when it comes to customer service investment decisions.

?

The research also uncovered dissatisfaction among customer service professionals as to the level of representation the contact centre has at board level, with almost one in 10 stating that the board is out of touch while a further 44% said these departments are only properly represented on some issues.

?

These are all issues that have been facing customer service professionals for a number of years but there is now an urgency to transform the role of the contact centre to become the cornerstone of an organisation?s customer service offering.? For businesses to succeed in the future will require to be agile, adaptable and flexible to their customer?s needs and expectations.? No mean feat for any business but a challenge organisations must face head on.

Lousy 401(k) Plan? - The Chicago Financial Planner

Like many financial advisors I generally suggest to most clients that they maximize their contributions to their company?s retirement plan. But what if your organization?s plan is lousy?? ??Lousy could mean poor investment choices, high expenses, or low or no company contributions.

Here are a few tips to help you make the best of a lackluster 401(k) plan:?

Find?the best funds?in the plan

Even in the worst plans that I?ve seen there are usually a couple of funds that are decent. Consider focusing your investments in those few funds. ?It is always important to consider outside investments when allocating your 401(k), but in this situation its absolutely critical.? You will need to allocate outside accounts such as a spouse?s retirement plan, IRAs, and brokerage accounts in harmony with your 401(k) to ensure that your overall portfolio is properly allocated.? You will also need to take this total portfolio approach when rebalancing.

Consider the Self-Directed Brokerage option if offered

A number of 401(k) plans offer a self-directed brokerage window for employees who want to invest in areas beyond the basic investment menu offered. ?These programs vary widely and the percentage of plans offering them is relatively low. ?If this option is available to you make sure that you understand all of the costs and the rules associated with this program. ?More importantly make sure that you are comfortable managing your own investments. ?For those who work with a financial advisor this can be a great alternative as well, I?ve utilized these options with great success over the years with several clients.

Get the full company match

If your company matches your contributions, contribute at least enough to receive the full company match. For example, if your plan offers to match half of your salary deferrals up to 6 percent of your salary, that?s an instant 50 percent ?return? on your money. That?s hard to beat.? It?s also free money; don?t leave it on the table.?

Focus on the overall amount that you need to save annually

Part of the financial plan that you hopefully have in place should deal with the amount that you will need to save annually to meet your retirement goals.? Your 401(k) is a piece of the puzzle but there are other vehicles that might be available to you.?

Contribute to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

Everyone with sufficient earned income can contribute $5,000 for 2012 ($6,000 if you?re age 50 or over) to an IRA. For 2013 these limits increase by $500.? For traditional IRAs, the ability to deduct your contributions on your tax return will depend upon your income. Likewise, with a Roth IRA there are income ceilings that determine whether you can make a Roth contribution.? With an after-tax IRA, contributions are made with after-tax dollars but all gains on the underlying investments grow tax-deferred.? Good records are needed here as a portion of future withdrawals will be attributed to your contributions and will not be taxed; however a portion will also be attributed to gains in the account and will be subject to taxes.?

Take advantage of other retirement savings options

If your spouse?s company offers a better plan, try to maximize your contributions to that plan first. Remember to first take full advantage of any matches offered by your company?s plan.? Do you run a business on the side? If the business is generating income, consider starting a retirement plan. Among?the options to consider?are a SIMPLE plan, a SEP IRA, and a Solo 401(k).??

Discuss your concerns with your company

Do your homework and outline your concerns with your employer?s plan. With new 401(k) disclosures that were issued to you earlier in the year you are now armed with more information about the plan, its holdings, and the underlying expenses than was available to you in the past.? These disclosures have made the issue of plan expenses a key topic for many plan sponsors, your plan administrator may be more receptive to your input than you might realize. Of course, common sense and civility should prevail when bringing concerns to the company?s attention.

Need help allocating your 401(k) account or your overall investment portfolio? ?Please feel free to?contact me.?

401(k) plan sponsors, do you want an independent review of your organization?s plan? ?Feel free to contact me?as well.

For you do-it-yourselfers, check out Morningstar.com to analyze the investment options offered in your 401(k) plan and get a free trial for their premium services.??

Hopes rise for "fiscal cliff" deal as Obama, Boehner meet

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The differences over how to resolve the "fiscal cliff" narrowed significantly Monday night as President Barack Obama made a counter-offer to Republicans that included a major change in position on tax hikes for the wealthy, according to a source familiar with the talks.

The move, which the source stressed was not Obama's final offer, was welcomed, albeit with reservations, by a spokesman for Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, who met earlier in the day with Obama as the two hammered out a way to avert steep tax hikes and indiscriminate spending reductions set for the beginning of 2013.

Considerable work remains as both sides now try to bridge the gaps between them and then sell a package to their respective allies in the U.S. Congress.

In its most dramatic change in position yet, the White House proposed leaving lower tax rates in place for everyone except those earning $400,000 and above, the source said on condition of anonymity. That's up from the $250,000 threshold the president has been demanding for months, but still far from Boehner's preference of $1 million.

Obama also moved closer to Boehner on the proportion of a ten-year deficit reduction package that should come from increased revenue, as opposed to cuts in government spending. Obama is now willing to accept a revenue figure of $1.2 trillion, down from his previous $1.4 trillion proposal.

Boehner's latest proposal calls for $1 trillion in new tax revenue, which would come from raising rates and limiting deductions that the wealthiest can take.

Some of the savings in spending proposed by Obama would come from reducing the size of cost-of-living increases for all but the most "vulnerable" recipients of the Social Security retirement program, the source said, through the use of a different formula to calculate the regular raises called "chained Consumer Price Index."

Obama and Boehner remained apart on the politically explosive issue of how and when to raise the government debt ceiling to permit the government to borrow more money.

Boehner has proposed a one-year boost in the debt ceiling, tied to spending cuts. Obama, as of Monday night, was pushing for a two-year increase, potentially a major concession that many congressional conservatives may find hard to swallow since they have used it to extract spending cuts from the White House.

Missing entirely from Obama's offer was an extension of the so-called "payroll tax holiday," which comes to an end on January 1 with an immediate negative impact on wage earners.

Introduced by Obama two years ago as an economic stimulus, the tax holiday reduced an employee's share of the payroll tax from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent. Because the tax supports the Social Security program, however, there have been divisions in both parties over continuing the holiday.

Because the details were incomplete and specifics vague, particularly on such issues as cutting the Medicare, the government health insurance program for seniors, it was uncertain how much resistance might come from Congress.

But the source stressed that Monday's offer was by no means the final one from the White House.

The response from Boehner's spokesman was also a positive signal. "Any movement away from the unrealistic offers the president has made previously is a step in the right direction," the spokesman said, emphasizing that differences remain on spending levels in particular.

"We hope to continue discussions with the president so we can reach an agreement that is truly balanced and begins to solve our spending problem."

The rapid developments Monday evening put a deal realistically within reach.

Obama and Boehner held talks at the White House earlier Monday, and aides from both parties said they were optimistic an agreement was shaping up.

Rank-and-file Republicans, however, could have trouble with the tax increases on the wealthiest Americans that are likely to be part of any deal, while Obama could have a tough time selling spending cuts to his fellow Democrats.

Investors were cheered earlier Monday, before news broke of Obama's counter-offer, by signs of progress and the Standard & Poor's 500 index of U.S. stocks rose 1.19 percent.

Economists warn that going over the fiscal cliff could push the economy into recession.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said his chamber will wrap up work on the issue after Christmas.

"It appears that we're going to be coming back the day after Christmas to complete work on the 'fiscal cliff,'" he said on the Senate floor.

Boehner faces a crucial test on Tuesday morning when he is expected to brief his party's lawmakers in the Republican-controlled House. He is not expected to bring any deal up for a vote unless a majority of the 241 House Republicans support it.

Republicans have campaigned for decades on a promise to keep taxes low, but Boehner in recent days has edged closer to Obama's demand to raise tax rates on top earners. In return, Obama could back a measure that would slow the rate of growth of Social Security benefits by changing the way they are measured against inflation, according to a Senate Democratic aide.

GETTING CLOSER ON TAXES

If there are no strong objections, he could try to finalize the deal with Obama on Wednesday, a Republican aide said.

Both sides declined to say what Boehner and Obama discussed at the meeting, which was also attended by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

The White House said Boehner's latest proposal does not meet its standards.

"Thus far, the president's proposal is the only proposal that we have seen that achieves the balance that is so necessary," White House spokesman Jay Carney said at a news briefing.

Republicans understand that the clock is ticking and they are confident that Boehner will get a deal they can support in the coming days, a senior House Republican aide said.

Republicans want substantial spending cuts in return for increased tax revenue, but any proposal to trim popular benefit programs like Medicare will face fierce resistance from liberal Democrats, whose votes will be needed to get a deal passed.

Obama could also face strong opposition from Democrats if he agrees to Boehner's proposal to slow the growth of Social Security benefits by changing the way the cost-of-living increases are measured against inflation, an approach that could save $200 billion over 10 years.

Obama also wants to head off another confrontation over the U.S. debt limit, which will need to be raised in the coming months. Republicans insist that any increase in the government's $16.4 trillion borrowing authority must be paired with an equal reduction in spending.

UK stocks push back up to nine month highs

LONDON Dec 19 (Reuters) - Britain's top share index pushed back up to nine

month highs on Wednesday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street and in Asia as

growing expectations of a budget deal in the United States boosted stocks in the

run up to Christmas.

At 0808 GMT, the FTSE 100 index was up 12.00 points, or 0.2 percent,

at 5,947.90, having posted gains of 0.4 percent on Tuesday, surpassing last

week's nine-month closing peak of 5,945.85 and within 20 points of its 2012

high.

The banking sector led the gainers with the sector in the

spotlight after Swiss peer UBS agreed to a $1.5 billion bill and

admitted to fraud on Wednesday in order to settle charges of manipulating global

benchmark interest rates.

The fine, the second largest to be received by a bank, was in line with

expectations and UBS shares added 0.3 percent in Zurich.

Ex-dividend factors trimmed 0.45 points off the FTSE 100 index on Wednesday,

with Burberry and United Utilities both trading without

entitlement to their latest payouts, leading market makers to adjust their

Keep your pet safe during the holiday season | Premier Pets

Pet emergencies can happen at any time; however the holidays can provide additional challenges with all the travel and festivities that accompany them. By recognizing an emergency and having a plan in place to respond you have very good chance of keeping your pet safe and perhaps saving their life.

?

The holiday season is filled with delicious food, beautiful decorations and visits by friends and family. As wonderful as these are, any of these can cause stress and even danger for your pet.

?

Food dangers include chocolate, macadamia nuts, alcohol and other food items can cause something as mild as a little stomach upset to something much more serious or even fatal.

Decking out the house for the holidays gets us all in the holiday spirit, but one emergency trip to the veterinarian can ruin holiday fun. Pets can find the smells and textures of holiday decorations very interesting and many of these can be extremely dangerous. Both cats and dogs can pull over Christmas trees and candelabras, ingested pine needles, tinsel, toxic plants and flowers and even tree lights.

?

How do know if you have a real emergency on your hands? Supervise your pet closely and watch for signs they would indicate a trip to the veterinarian is in order. These include:

  • Trauma, bleeding, broken bones
  • Lethargy
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Bloody stool
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased or no water intake
  • Ingesting a poisonous food, toxic substance or foreign object
  • Collapse, unconsciousness, disorientation or seizure
  • Abdomen is hard and/or swollen

?

Check with your veterinarian now to confirm their holiday hours of operation. They should also be able to provide a number for the closest emergency or 24 hour veterinary hospital for when they are unavailable. Make a list of these numbers and post them near the phone or add them to your mobile phone address book along with the number for Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435. Call about any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, make the call that can make all the difference. Have a debit or credit card ready there is a charge to use the service, but it is worth it to save your pets life.

The holidays often bring lots of visitors to your home or your own travel to visit friend and family. Pets can find these situations overwhelming and become anxious or frightened and try to escape and accidentally get loose. Be prepared by having your pet?s id tag up to date with your contact information.

To keep pets safe at home place them in closed bedroom or a crate avoids the possibility of them slipping out as guests arrive.

When traveling:

  • Pets should be in a crate or in the back with safety/car harnesses or behind pet safety gates.
  • Get an additional ID tag listing your temporary location and cell phone number for the pet?s collar.
  • Have the numbers for local animal control or police in the area you are traveling through and for your final destination.
  • Keep current pictures of your pet available on a laptop, tablet or cell phone just in case your pet becomes lost. Both a full body view and a close up.

?

Being prepared for your pet emergency can make all the difference in having a Happy Holiday.

'Psycho' Writer's Widow Says 'Hitchcock' Full of Lies and Mistakes ...

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stefano's widow and son are in settlement talks with Fox Searchlight Pictures over the depiction of Stefano in the current film Hitchcock,?which they claim wrongly credits Alfred Hitchcock's wife with Stefano's ideas and work on the classic thriller.

Behind the Scenes Photos of 'Hitchcock' Filming in Montrose

Marilyn and Dominic Stefano of Agoura Hills have hired legal counsel to represent Joseph Stefano?s estate in seeking compensation from the studio.

?Fox Searchlight?s actions ? have caused, and will continue to cause, financial damages to our client and to his intellectual property interests and injury to our client?s legacy in connection with Psycho,? attorney William Sobel wrote in a letter to the studio in October.

Negotiations between lawyers for Stefano?s estate and the studio are ongoing. Sobel and Fox Searchlight spokeswoman Lauren Hochberg declined to comment on the status of the talks.

Hitchcock, now in theaters, is about the relationship between the legendary filmmaker, played by Anthony Hopkins, and his wife, Alma Reville, played by Helen Mirren, during the filming of Psycho.?

In the official trailer, Hitchcock asks Reville if she is intrigued by the idea of having the heroine killed halfway through the movie. ?You shouldn?t wait until halfway through; kill her off after 30 minutes,? Mirren?s character replies. (Go to 1:33 in the attached video.)

That scene in particular angered Marilyn Stefano, and it is cited by her attorney in his letter to the studio.

?In fact, it is well-documented in numerous publications that our client [Joseph Stefano] conceived the ? idea, and the film falsely attributes our client?s work product and ingenuity to Mr. Hitchcock?s wife,? Sobel wrote.

Marilyn Stefano, who was on the set for the shooting of Psycho?s infamous shower scene, said she was "appalled" by Hitchcock and its ?lies? and ?mistakes? in the depiction of her husband, of the famed director and others who were involved in making the film, which was released in 1960.

"How on earth did Sacha Gervasi get to direct this film?" Marilyn said. "So many mistakes, errors, changes of facts and lies."

Hochberg said Gervasi was traveling and unavailable to comment.

Joseph Stefano adapted the Psycho screenplay from the novel by Robert Bloch. He also went on to produce and write episodes of the television series The Outer Limits, Psycho IV: The Beginning?and other films and TV shows. He died in 2006 at the age of 84.

Credit Where It's Not Due

The movie's depiction of Joseph Stefano and its portrayal of Reville suggesting that the Marion Crane character, played by Janet Leigh, be killed early in the film, has so angered Marilyn that she wrote her criticisms in a letter to Agoura Hills Patch.

?The script written by my husband was what turned an ugly, trashy little book into a movie watched and studied by every film class in the world, I dare say,? Marilyn wrote. ?But to claim that Alma revised it, and came up with the idea of killing the heroine off within the first 30 minutes, is such an outrageous lie that it infuriates me. It's taking credit from the real writer, whose dialogue is printed and quoted by so many, without crediting anyone but the great Hitchcock?and now the great Alma Reville.?

?Shortly after Joe and Hitch meet [in the movie],? Marilyn wrote, ?Hitch tells Alma he had Stefano write out the first few scenes, asks her to read them and she tells him??Hire him.? ? There?s no way Joe would have started writing any of the script without first being hired?which he was at the end of that first meeting?he would have gotten in trouble with the Writers Guild that doesn?t allow auditioning.

?They have a scene where Peggy, Hitch?s assistant, actually says that the credit should be: Written by Joseph Stefano and Alma Reville! (Alma says: ?The people who matter know. That?s all that counts.?)? Strangely, this little scene is not in the script the studio sends out for writing nomination. Did they ad-lib it??

The Opening Scene

Marilyn told Patch in a previous interview that her husband had his famous first meeting with Hitchcock in 1959, shortly after reading Bloch?s book, which only introduces Marion Crane as she's checking into the infamous Bates Motel.

"He was on his way to the meeting at Paramount when he wrote the whole opening scene to the movie in his head," Marilyn said. ?Joe wanted to develop more of a back-story for the character, so when she dies the audience misses her.?

Hitchcock was so impressed that Joseph got the job on the spot, she said.

More Criticisms

Marilyn had other criticisms of the film:

Joseph, played by Ralph Macchio, is portrayed as being nervous and disheveled, late for his first meeting with Hitchcock, and prone to talking about his personal psychoanalysis with the great director.

?[Joseph] always dressed elegantly,? Marilyn wrote. ?He was not intimidated by Hitch or anyone else, so he wouldn?t have been nervous. And he was eager to talk about the movie, not analysis, and certainly not that he?d been in analysis so long?that might have made Hitch worry that he was too unreliable and unstable to hire.?

?After a scene with Scarlett [Johansson, playing Janet Leigh], she goes into a dressing room to be fitted, and Hitch goes into his office, which evidently is right next to that dressing room, takes down a painting and stares at her through a peephole. In his office?? Since when are the two [rooms] next to each other on a set? Tacky and stupid!"

?They show Hitch first reading the book, with the cover clearly showing the slashed letters, which were designed for the film, so he was reading a book that wasn?t designed yet."

?Though he?s shooting at Universal-Revue [Studios], Barney Balaban (the head of Paramount) comes onto the set demanding to see footage, even though he?s not financing the picture and has no right to even be at the studio."

?I found the picture mean-spirited, with lots of negative things to say about well-known people merely to make people laugh,? Marilyn wrote. ?It painted a portrait of this brilliant, one-of-a-kind director/producer as a greedy, malevolent, totally self-centered man who was incapable of showing appreciation and support for anyone?.

"Of all the directors Joe worked with, Hitch and Marty Ritt [The Black Orchid] were the very best, the most generous and so self-assured that they liked to have the writer involved?."

Marilyn said that after Hitchcock got to know Joseph and her, he shared his expertise in wine and food with them. Hitchcock also asked if he and Alma could come to a Christmas party they were hosting.

"When they arrived at our house, he planted himself in the bow of the piano that faced the entry door," she wrote. "When people walked through that door, the first person they saw was ALFRED HITCHCOCK!....

?It?s partly out of these fond memories that I?m angry and appalled that they would treat Hitch with so little respect. So I?m speaking up for him?in addition to being upset about their attempts to tarnish my husband?s great contribution to this classic film that still fascinates people.?
