NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York City auction house will offer an online auction of Andy Warhol's works, giving a broader audience the chance to own a piece of his art.
It's Christie's first online-only Warhol sale. About 125 paintings, drawings, photographs and prints will be offered from Feb. 26 through March 5. Pre-sale estimates range from $600 to $70,000.
The auction is being held in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
The works can be previewed online prior to the sale.
Bidders can browse, bid and receive instant updates by email or phone if another bid exceeds theirs.
Christie's and the foundation entered the partnership last fall.
The first live auction raised $17 million for the Warhol Foundation's endowment.
Only a few of people agree to the fact that carpet can become one of the greatest alternatives for home flooring. Most people think that to have carpet is quite troublesome. The first is related to how the carpet is usually offered in relatively high price. It means that the people need to prepare quite big amount of money in order to get the carpet.
?
Such amount can be even bigger if they want to cover big area of the house with carpet. The second trouble is about how difficult it is to maintain the condition of the carpet. As a matter of fact, it is not really that hard. As long as if you have a vacuum cleaner and you are willing to clean it regularly, you can make sure that the condition of the carpet can be well maintained. People also think that it can be hard to find the carpet that suits their desire in both the design and quality. They do not want to wander around and compare the stores one by one since it will be time consuming. Even though they do that, there is no guarantee that they can get the carpet like what they want.
?
Does it mean that carpet should not be chosen for flooring idea? As a matter of fact, you should think the opposite. The things mentioned before can actually be solved if you really know what to do. To get high quality yet cheap carpets, you need to know where to get it. You can choose the help from the online flooring store such as Woodbridge carpet stores so you can save your time and also energy. Such online store normally offers various kinds of carpet so you will surely get what you want. This kind of store usually often cheaper prices as well. So, starting from now on, you should not think that the carpet is not a great idea for your flooring.
BEIJING (AP) ? The Chinese version is no easier to read than the original, the loyal-minded translator assures, but James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake" has still sold out its initial run in China.
Wang Weisong, chief editor of the Shanghai company that published the first Chinese translation of the Joyce classic, says he didn't expect success, but the first 8,000 copies have sold out since Dec. 25.
Dai Congrong, who spent eight years translating it, said at a forum in Shanghai that she didn't fully grasp the novel but that it wasn't intended for easy comprehension. She says she kept the Chinese version that way.
The book was promoted by a rare billboard campaign in Shanghai and other cities. Critics say it panders to a superficial demand among some Chinese for high-brow imports.

Updated at 12:10 a.m. ET: A man boarded a school bus in southeastern Alabama on Tuesday afternoon, fatally shot the driver and then grabbed a 6-year-old before fleeing, authorities said, according to The Associated Press.?
Authorities said the man took the child to an underground bunker behind a nearby church, according to the AP. Police were negotiating with the suspect late Tuesday evening. WSFA 12 News reported that the child is still with the suspect and is "OK."?
The Dale County Sheriff told WBMA-TV that the man demanded a child be let off the bus with him. When the driver refused, police said, the man shot the driver. The driver died of gunshot wounds. ?
Michael Creel, a neighbor of the suspected shooter, told? The Dothan Eagle?newspaper that his sister heard gunshots so he went outside. He saw children running away from the bus.
A little girl reportedly told Creel that the suspected shooter had come on the bus and demanded that two children ages of 6 to 8 come with him. ?
Multiple agencies, including a bomb unit, were on the scene along a rural highway near Midland City, in the area of Dothan and Ozark, the Dale County Sheriff's Department said.?
School officials said all Dale County and Ozark city schools would be closed Wednesday.
Law enforcement officials closed roads in the area.
It wasn't clear how many children had been on the bus, but Lisa Harden of the Dale County School District told NBC News that it was carrying children of all ages.
The other children were taken to a high school so their parents could pick them up, Harden said. The Eagle reported that at least seven children were seen being taken to nearby vehicles.

In Heart of Darkness, Jeremiah P. Ostriker and Simon Mitton add new stars to the constellation of astronomy to tell the subject's full history
WE HAVE all heard of the Hubble Space Telescope, named after Edwin Hubble, but where is the Tinsley telescope?
Beatrice Tinsley was an excellent astronomer, but her career was stymied by an establishment set against giving a salary to the wife of an academic - even if she was also a gifted scientist. Tinsley made at least two vital contributions to our understanding of the universe's history, but she had to divorce her husband and grant him custody of the children to get any recognition of her talents.
In Heart of Darkness, Jeremiah Ostriker and Simon Mitton explore modern cosmology while recasting what they term the "simple linear parade of heroes" of standard accounts. Among the uncelebrated stars of cosmology they discuss, Tinsley shines brightest, but there are others: Milton Humason, a poorly educated mule-driver and janitor who assisted Hubble in his observations, and Vesto Slipher, who, despite working in the shadow of a boss obsessed with finding evidence for Martian civilisations, made the first observations that told us about the expansion of the universe.
Why do some names last and others fade? As well as being a great astronomer, Hubble was a "showman", and a "comfortable celebrity", say Ostriker and Mitton. Tinsley, meanwhile, was diagnosed with cancer the year she finally made full professor (at Yale). She died four years later, aged 40. Like a supernova, she burned brightly but briefly. Hopefully, this thorough and inspiring book will secure her a place in cosmological history.
Not that Ostriker and Mitton's book is focused solely on people - quite the opposite. Relatively few biographical details are given: it is their scientific contributions that are explored - and with aplomb.
This is a strong, confident book, easily one of the best guides to why cosmologists make the claims they do. Yet for all their redistribution of credit, the cosmology that the authors set out remains uncontroversial. It is the universe that began in a singularity, passed through a period of rapid inflation, and is now dominated by dark matter and dark energy. The state of our knowledge, they say, represents a "stunning" accomplishment.
This is the dilemma of modern cosmology: what counts as success? Summing up, Ostriker and Mitton simultaneously cite a "pretty impressive list of successes" while acknowledging that cosmology is "profoundly incomplete". We don't know what caused the inflation, what constitutes dark matter or what lies behind dark energy. In the end, the authors settle for a declaration that there's plenty for future cosmologists to do.
If there is one flaw in this crystal clear book, it's a lack of depth in the discussion of the dark side of the universe. It provides the book's title and is supposed to account for 96 per cent of the universe, but is confined to two chapters towards the end. Alternatives to dark matter are dismissed in little more than a paragraph and compared to pre-Copernican efforts to keep the Earth at the centre of the cosmos. When many respected scientists support the continued search for alternatives, that seems somewhat disingenuous.
Were she still with us, Tinsley would no doubt argue that there are compelling reasons to believe in the existence of dark matter, but that there are good reasons to consider alternatives, too. Her unique contribution to cosmology was to persuade a dismissive establishment that galaxies change their properties over time. In so doing, she exposed a gaping hole in the cosmology of the 1970s. It was a supreme achievement, if unwelcome.
Clearly, if you want your name to go down in history (or onto a telescope) it's better to be a showman than a troublemaker. But if the history of science teaches us anything, it's that the troublemakers should be celebrated too.

The frequency and severity of extreme weather systems continues to impact the lives of people around the globe and increasingly in our own communities. Following Hurricane Sandy, many investors are becoming acutely aware of the presence of fossil fuel companies in their own portfolios. It seems clear that climate change is no longer solely a threat to future generations. The damage to the environment, economy, homes, and lives is happening today.
The Trillium-managed Green Century Balanced Fund (Ticker: GCBLX) has been fossil fuel-free since 2005. In 2008, Trillium launched its Sustainable Opportunities strategy, which has been fossil-fuel free since inception.

If the Nexus 4's recent scarcity has been making you want it even more, there's good news: it's now back on Google Play shelves. After a lengthy shortage resulted in a minor finger-pointing episode between Mountain View and manufacturer LG, the pair have starting restocking the popular quad-core, Android 4.2-pure device, on Play, well ahead of LG's February estimate. So far, it's only popped up in Germany, and there's no word yet on when they'll arrive elsewhere. Given the pent-up demand, however, you may want to grab one when it does.
Technology is viewed by businesses as both an enabler and a disabler of business productivity. With a massive number of online games and applications available to create a distraction for employees during the day, whether it means catching up on the latest events on one?s online farm or pinning photos of favorite home decor, there are endless ways employees can kill valuable business time with technology.
There are also many applications that exist, however, to improve business productivity. Here are five of our favorites:
Skype ? This one seems like a bit of a no-brainer and is one of the most oft-used, if not the most oft-used VoIP solution for mobile. You have the ability to call both landlines and mobile phones with this application. Video calls and a messaging function are free as long as you have access to 3G or a Wi-Fi connection.
Turboscan ? This is scanning and faxing on-the-go. Gone are the days of needing a clunky scanner and fax machine at your disposal. With this application, you can simply use your phone to take a photograph of each page of the document you wish to fax to someone, and it magically becomes a high-resolution PDF that you can e-mail.
Bank of America? This banking application will easily enable you to handle business bills on the fly and make transfers. It will also take care of many other types of banking needs for you all from the confines of your phone. The app makes managing business finances simple and easy when on-the-go.
Dropbox for teams ? Sharing files has never been so easy. This great app allows business teams to collaborate and share documents from any number of platforms. Storage availability starts at 1,000 GB for a group or 200 GB per user, but additional storage needs can easily be accommodated. Clients can even access your files, regardless of whether they have access to Dropbox. Privacy options for files are also available.
Salesforce ? This fantastic mobile app makes an already efficient product even more efficient. Sales associates who are on-the-go will love this app that allows for up-to-the-minute updates from your team regarding problems customers might be having. It also offers useful metrics for sales calls and access to your sales data and dashboards from your phone.
In an age when our phones tend to be tethered to our bodies, it simply makes sense to use them to help us optimize business productivity ? and there are many fantastic business-related applications available.
Be sure to check your favorite online tools to see if they have apps available. The five apps listed here are just a few of many that will definitely shave some minutes off of your day that can be utsed for other productive things (or not)!

NEW YORK (AP) ? A wayward dolphin swam into a polluted canal on Friday, and marine experts watched to see if it would head back out to the ocean on its own or would need help.
The deep-freeze weather didn't seem to faze the dolphin as it splashed around in the Gowanus Canal, which runs 1.5 miles through a narrow industrial zone near some of Brooklyn's wealthiest neighborhoods.
Bundled-up onlookers took cellphone photos, and a news helicopter hovered overhead.
The dolphin, which appeared to be about 7 feet long, surfaced periodically and shook black gunk from its snout in the polluted water.
The New York Police Department said marine experts with the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation were waiting to see if the dolphin would leave the canal on its own during the high tide, which lasts from about 7:10 p.m. until Saturday morning. If not, they planned to lend a hand on Saturday.
The foundation, based in Riverhead, on eastern Long Island, specializes in cases involving whales, dolphins, seals and sea turtles.
The filthy canal was named a Superfund site in 2010, meaning the government can force polluters to pay for its restoration. For more than a century before, coal yards, chemical factories and fuel refineries on the canal's banks discharged everything from tar to purple ink into the water, earning it the local nickname The Lavender Lake for its unnatural hue.
The dolphin likely entered the canal from the Atlantic Ocean through the Lower and Upper New York Bays and into the Gowanus Bay, which leads to the canal. It's about 20 miles from the canal to open ocean.
It may seem strange, but it's not uncommon for sea creatures to stray into city waters ? though they don't often swim away alive.
A dolphin was found dead last August near Long Island, south of the canal. Another washed up in June in the Hudson River near Manhattan's Chelsea Piers sports complex.
In 2007, a baby minke whale that briefly captivated the city wandered into the Gowanus Bay and swam aimlessly before dying.
Two years later, a humpback whale took a tour of the city's waters before leaving New York Harbor safely. The 20-foot whale was first seen in Queens before it headed for Brooklyn, took a swing through the harbor and headed toward open waters near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
MOSCOW (AP) ? The mother of a whistle-blowing Russian lawyer who died in prison is thanking President Barack Obama for a U.S. law targeting Russian officials deemed to be human rights violators involved in her son's death.
Sergei Magnitsky died in jail of untreated pancreatitis in 2009 after accusing Russian officials of stealing $230 from the state. The case has angered both Russian activists and the West, and in December, the U.S. Congress passed legislation in Magnitsky's name, calling for sanctions against officials deemed to be connected with human rights abuses.
Natalya Magnitskaya said Thursday she is grateful to Obama for facilitating the adoption of the bill saying that it "will somehow keep my son's memory."
She also criticized Moscow's decision to bar Americans from adopting Russian children in retaliation.
You are here: Home ? This and That ? Me And My Dolly ? A Moving Story
I am not a fan of moving. I?ve moved a number of times in my life, all but one of them with my husband. None of those moves involved a moving company, that was always outside of our budget even with resources like a moving website. We have had some interesting things happen while moving, and have a number of funny moving stories. One of the stories that I know I?ll never forget is the one about the day we helped my brother LB2 move out of his apartment a couple of years ago.
We spent a whole weekend helping him load up boxes and furniture and take it to a storage space. He had a lot of stuff ? far more then I would have thought or expected him to have considering it was only a one bedroom apartment that he?d only been in for one year. We?d arranged to get a truck from the storage place where he was storing his things.
When we got there the truck was already out. Not having time to waste, we went to Home Depot and rented one of their trucks. There was no deal, no sale signs, nothing proclaiming the need to take advantage of this offer from Sainsburys or anything like that. They charged us a flat rate for the day. Simple. The great move was on.
First out was the big furniture ? couch, loveseat, bed, dressers, etc. My brother thought it would be easier if we used the freight elevator in his building. What the rest of us didn?t know is that it was about 180 degrees opposite his apartment. There were two looooooooooooong hallways we had to go down for each trip to that elevator. While the guys moved the big things I moved boxes. There were boxes on top of boxes. The boxes contained all of the little stuff, food storage containers, kitchen electrics and stuff like that. Nothing perishable. Actually, there was no food at all, since he knew he wouldn?t be emptying the space for a while.
It took under a minute to realize we?d neglected to get a handtruck to move the boxes. I improvised and used my brother?s computer chair. That helped with the carrying but not with the temperature. The hallways were as hot as a greenhouse. I was there for almost six hours before I had to go home. I walked what felt like miles, pushing my chair full of boxes. I came home and collapsed on the couch ? every muscle in my body was aching. The guys (RB, LB2 and LB3) were up there for a good fours hours more and they were sore too. At the end of the day everyone was beat. Had we been in the UK and I?d been there I would have thought ahead and bought one or two of the best Tesco deals on wine. But, this was Bayonne and I wasn?t so the guys made do with a six pack.
Do you have any funny moving stories? What would you use if you didn?t have a handtruck or dolly?

Most of the world's plant and animal species could be named before they go extinct, say researchers.
Writing in the journal Science, the researchers said it could be achieved this century.
This is largely a result of an increase in taxonomists - the people who describe species new to science.
The scientists acknowledge that although there is an extinction crisis, they say the rates are lower than previously thought.
Discovering and naming the world's species is critical for their conservation and can be done with only a modest increase in effort, the researchers stated.
But they also recognised it will be difficult to maintain a high rate of discovery as it becomes harder to find rare species.
Previous overestimates of the number of species - some as high as 100 million, led some in the scientific community to believe that it would be impossible to name all the world's species before they go extinct.
Naming a species gives formal recognition to its existence, making conservation easier, said lead author, Associate Professor Dr Mark Costello, from The University of Auckland.
"We believe that with just a modest increase in effort in taxonomy and conservation, most species could be discovered and protected from extinction."
As more information on taxonomy is available to the public via the internet, amateur as well as professional taxonomists are increasing, especially in regions such as Asia and South America, which are rich in biodiversity.
"We've discovered three times more people now naming species than there were ever before. We're in the golden age of taxonomy," added Dr Costello.
He hopes that this increase will continue, and that the public become more involved.
There are currently around around 1.5 million species which have been named. Dr Costello and his colleagues estimate the total number species on Earth ranges from two to eight million.
"Overestimates of the number of species on Earth are self-defeating because they can make attempts to discover and conserve biodiversity appear to be hopeless," said Dr Costello.
Jean-Christophe Vie, deputy director of the International Union for Conservation of Nature species programme, disagrees with the review's conclusion that "species are more likely to be described than become extinct".
"Extinction is usually underestimated. It's more important to fight extinction than to describe or catalogue all species," he said.
"We can protect species even if we don't know all of them. I have no doubt we can catalogue all of life, and it would be useful, but we don't have the luxury of time."
"I am worried by the message implying that to conserve species you need to know everything about them. You can do a lot of protection even in the absence of knowledge."
To reduce the time it takes to name the world's species, Dr Costello and colleagues recommend more taxonomists to be employed, increased financial support and international coordination in the scientific community to share expertise.
Professor Georgina Mace, from the Centre for Population Biology at Imperial College London, welcomes the analysis but also questions whether we really need to know the names of all species.
"Its excellent news, that taxonomic expertise is moving very effectively to tropical countries where most of the biodiversity on Earth is," she said.
She added that with sensible sampling, conservationists can prioritise effort on groups of species that are disappearing in the places most under threat.
"Once you've done that you can put in place conservation actions that will benefit everything there, whether named or not."
"It is part of our cultural responsibility to have looked at every single species of earth, but because it can be difficult to do, particularly the last few percent. We need to be quite strategic about the effort put into discovering, describing, monitoring and conserving."
The levels of investment needed to name all the species is very modest, in global terms, said Professor Ken Norris, director of centre for Agri-Environmental research at Reading University.
He added that many species play important functional roles in the way Earth works and the life support systems they provide.
"If we lose them, important functions of those systems - like purifying water, providing fertile soils and clean air - might be damaged without us realising what we've lost," Prof Norris explained.
"Extinction isn't just about losing part of Earth's evolutionary history, it might also involve fundamental changes in the Earth's ecosystems that may have detrimental effects on mankind."
Yesterday, I received a call from a lovely woman named May* living in Birmingham, Ala. May initially called my office to find out where our magazines were available near her home. However, we started to chat about being a family caregiver. And, after a few minutes, she asked if I would give her some advice.
Since my clever response of "no hablo ingles" didn't even get a faint response, I realized that her question could be rather serious. It was. May blurted out, "My mother and I never got along, how am I supposed to be there for her every day? I don't even like her."
Now May, that is a question!
First, I congratulate May for having the courage to ask such a brutally honest question. Trust me. Having communicated with thousands of family caregivers, there are many questions dealing with some aspect of this emotionally-draining issue. Let's face it. Not everyone was raised by Ozzie and Harriet (especially for those of you over 50 years old).
So how do you take care of someone you may love but who you just don't like? Dr. Robert Holden, Ph.D. has a wonderful saying, "You need to be honest before you're positive." I cannot think of a more appropriate place to start.
It's nonsense for anyone to tell you to just block out the past and make today a fresh start. It's baloney! And, unless you are a super-enlightened person with incredible control over your ego, I believe this advice is not too constructive. So let's take a look at several steps that May and I discussed. I believe they can help.
Let's call them "The 4 Ls":
Level
If you are feeling angst about your relationship with the loved one you're caring for, you are not alone. There is a good chance that they have similar feelings. Perhaps they're not on the same level, but there is an emotional distance between you.
These conditions, although uncomfortable, promote the opportunity to put your cards on the table and discuss what is bothering you. It's an effort to bridge the distance between you. Remember, be honest. If you're not, you'll be back in the same position next week!
Learn
Since life is not a one-way street, this is also the time to openly listen to the thoughts of your loved one. Our egos, especially when they have been bruised for a long time, can make accepting alternative viewpoints difficult... to say the least. But, if you are sincerely open, you may learn something that can help build a healthier conversation and relationship. By the way, this is also a great approach in dealing with everyone in general.
Let Go
While acceptance can be difficult, it can also be very liberating. Accepting the relationship, warts and all, is necessary if there is any chance of moving forward in a way that can make the time you spend together enriching. (OK, OK, how about we start with tolerable and try to evolve to enriching!) There are countless family caregivers, who after their experience as a caregiver have moved their relationship to a place they never knew possible.
Live
Yes, live! Under the best of circumstances, being a family caregiver presents some challenging times. No one is asking you to give up who you are for the sake of being the primary caregiver. But it is very important that you determine expectations as soon as possible to ensure resentment does not creep in (any more than normal). You need to talk with your loved one about each of your needs and foster respect for each other's circumstances. Don't feel you need to give up friendships and time for yourself.
Well, I really debated on bringing this up but... there is actually a fifth "L."
Leave
I wouldn't really be giving you the complete picture if I didn't mention that sometimes a relationship is in such a state that it just can't be worked out. There are times that people can't forget their differences -- not because they are stubborn, or selfish, or uncaring, but because there is just too broad a chasm to cross. When being together is this unmanageable, it can affect the health and well-being of both the family caregiver and the one in their care. This being the case, it may be that the best thing for everyone's sake is to find other resources to provide caregiving assistance in a way that ensures your family member experiences the best quality care possible.
As I said to May, working these situations out takes time, because emotional changes (on both sides) don't happen overnight. There's a Latin phrase that applies here. Tabula Rasa. It means "blank state." Instead of starting with a blank slate, let's be realistic -- start with a polka dot slate and over time work toward removing the not-so-pretty dots.

Microsoft Research and UN scientists are embarking on a highly ambitious project: A computational model of an entire ecosystem, from the soil itself to the creatures that live on it.
Such a comprehensive model would be useful not just to biologists, but to city planners and legislators, who could see concrete?predictions regarding things like deforestation and dams.
To model anything from nature properly is a monumental task, regardless of scale. A single atom, a single cell, or a single organism contains so much information and so many variables that it is effectively impossible to model them perfectly.
Modeling?an entire ecosystem with any accuracy, then, is a task of mind-boggling complexity. But not too long ago, so was sequencing the human genome, or simulating the way proteins form and fold in the molecular soup of our bodies. Drew Purves at Microsoft Research in Cambridge thinks the time has come for what the company describes as a General Ecosystem Model?(also known as GEM)?? capable of simulating just about any ecosystem in the world.
Purves wrote an article for the journal Nature announcing the?team's intentions, and calling for others to help out ? because it's not a small project. They've already created a prototype, called the Madingley Model, which is already more ambitious than anything out there.
"There are a huge number of ecological and environmental models, but in our opinion, nothing that is yet as comprehensive as a GEM would be," Purves told NBC News in an emailed statement. Models for certain areas of the ocean, or specific types of forests, already exist, but can't be adapted easily. He wants to make one that's powerful enough to be applied anywhere, from the deep ocean to the high desert; you'd just need to put in the correct parameters.
It wouldn't be perfect, but you?don't need a perfect model of something to make useful predictions: Tomorrow's weather, the effects of a drug, and the existence of subatomic particles like the Higgs Boson were all theorized from imperfect models. And Purves cautions that while the researchers' work has a broader range than anything out there, it's still missing a lot.
Even without simulating bacteria or the effects of certain features like streams, researchers can reach predictions that match up to the real world. A rise in temperature, for example, would kill off certain plants and cause others to thrive, which would affect the soil they live in, the herbivores that feed on them, and the carnivores that feed on them. It could all be simulated within the model.
But they still need data. Lots more data. Purves elaborates:?"What we are really missing is good data on the state of whole ecosystems... how much herbivore biomass there is in total, or, how many individuals of each size class?" After all, a thousand, big wildebeest may consume more grass than small ones, and seek out higher territories. And since every creature ends up recycled into the ecosystem again, every statistic is important to keep track of.
Purves hopes that the model will enable not just advances in science, but in policy as well. With a true model of a state or region's ecosystem, the effects of dams, runoff, climate change, and other things can be calculated objectively and included as part of the lawmaking discussion. On that front, the researchers have been?collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme to help?hone?their work for political relevance and broaden its?applications.
It's a work in progress, but in a few years it could be a powerful resource for anyone looking into the effects of just about anything on the environment and its denizens. New updates to the project will be logged at the Computational Ecology and Environmental Science section of Microsoft Research.

iOS: Vine is a free app for iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to shoot and capture short videos?about six seconds in length?and then share them with friends on Twitter and Facebook. The service integrates tightly with Twitter, partially because Vine was acquired by them today.
Vine is a free app and free service, and while the company is partnered with Twitter, you don't need a Twitter a account to use it. Just grab the mobile app and start shooting. You are restricted to short videos, six seconds or less, but once you've stopped recording, Vine creates a loop of the video and readies it for your friends to see.
From there it's a single tap to get the video up on Facebook or over at Twitter?where people can see the video embedded in your tweet. Check out this example or this one to see what the app can do. Hit the link below to learn more, or grab the app from the iTunes App Store to try it out.

Clemson University researchers: What happens to peaches when the chill is gone?Public release date: 24-Jan-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ]

CLEMSON, S.C. The warmer-than-normal temperatures of 2012 the fourth warmest year on record in South Carolina signal potential challenges for growers of the state's best-known fruit. Peaches need cold weather to produce flowers and fruit. What happens when the chill is gone?
"In the spring, many of us think it's longer days and warmer temperatures that start the growth cycle," said Clemson University plant biologist Douglas Bielenberg. "Actually, peach leaf and flower buds are set the previous summer, then they go dormant in the winter. The tree must get sufficient chilling hours to trigger buds to open. Without this chill time, very few peach varieties will bloom well, if at all."
With research funding from the Clemson University Experiment Station, Bielenberg's work on plant dormancy and chilling can help plant breeders and the S.C. peach industry deal with agricultural and economic consequences of climate change.
The requirement for winter cold is the major factor in determining where peaches can be reliably grown for commercial fruit production. Historically, most commercially appealing peaches were developed in colder climates, where chilling hours posed no problem. In warmer regions, such as the coastal South, plant breeders had to cross those appealing peach varieties with lower-quality, low-chill varieties. Breeding premium fruit with low chilling hours has been an ongoing project.
"To grow peaches in low-chill areas breeders had to incorporate genes from trees that did not have elite fruit quality but did have low-chilling genes, which means they diluted the quality traits and then had to build them back up," Bielenberg said. "This takes time years and years. Our work provides research-based information and techniques to breeders to speed up the incorporation of low-chill genes into current elite cultivars while maintaining high fruit-quality traits. The goal is to adapt our current cultivars to future warmer winters."
But there is a flip side to the temperature dilemma. Peaches also need warm temperatures at the right time. An early spring warmup followed by a plummeting cold snap can bring disaster.
This is what happened in 2007 when the entire state crop was wiped out, said Bielenberg. Before the buds open they are more frost resistant. The ideal system would be a chilling requirement that matches local winter conditions combined with a higher heat requirement to keep buds closed longer and protect them from possible sharp freezes.
"The work we are doing not only involves understanding the chilling requirement, but also should help us breed for increased heat requirement to help protect the industry from late freezes," he said. The challenge is that heat requirement is not very well understood and is difficult to study since the timing of chilling and heat requirements overlap.
The temperature needs to be around 45 degrees or lower to meet the chill requirement for peaches. Different varieties need varied chilling times ranging from a couple of hundred hours to more than a thousand. Peach trees can "count" the chilling hours and suspend the count if there is a warm spell, then continue where they stopped when the chilling hours begin again.
Much remains unknown, Bielenberg said. How does a peach tree "sense" the temperature? How does it keep track of the number of chilling hours? How does it blend chilling hours with warming temperatures to control blossoming and growth?
"You can think of what we don't know as a 'black box,' and we haven't figured out how to see what's going on inside," he said.
Bielenberg and colleagues Gregory Reighard and Ksenija Gasic in Clemson's School of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences are analyzing the peach genome looking for "DNA road signs" markers that can locate genes involved in chilling requirements, dormancy and growth.
"What we are learning is that there is not just one gene that controls the process; and it's not just about sufficient cooler temperatures but also warm temperatures, too," Bielenberg said.
The work will go a long way toward giving breeders like Gasic the tools to adapt fruit trees to climate change.
Second to top-producer California, South Carolina peach growers harvest about 90,000 tons per year valued at $60 million. Each year Clemson plant scientists evaluate more than 350 peach varieties to provide information needed by South Carolina growers.
Bielenberg and his colleagues have planted a special stand of 400 peach trees that contain genetic material between the extremes of chilling requirements. The seeds were given to Bielenberg by their developer, USDA Agriculture Research Service plant breeder W.R. Okie. They provide an opportunity to discover the mechanisms that cause variations in chilling requirements and may lead to discovering how to keep producing South Carolina peaches in spite of warming temperatures.
Understanding how the process works could affect other perennial fruit and nut crops, such as apples and pears, which are not related but require chilling hours.
