A careful and clear communication strategy is the foundation of any successful business turnaround process. It is important that an effective communication strategy is defined about the reasons, the benefits, the plans and proposed effects of that change. This communication strategy needs to address:
- What are the objectives?
- What are the key messages?
- Who are we trying to reach and why?
- What information will be communicated?
- When will information be disseminated, and what are the relevant timings?
- How much information will be provided, and to what level of detail?
- What mechanisms will be used to disseminate information?
- How will feedback be encouraged?
- What will be done as a result of feedback?
Most people involved in Turnarounds are accountants or have operational experience. Whilst this is a good thing in one way, there are tendencies to ignore the sales and marketing side of the business, apart from reducing their budgets.
There is room for the transactional side of a turnaround and also the creative side of the turnaround too.
This step actually takes place during part of the dialogue listed above. By getting the people connected and inspired by the original intention of the business, the company?s ?Why??, can have people seeking to thrive rather than trying to survive. These two environments are drastically different in mindset and performance levels.
